VDownloader
Description
Saving a video from the internet to your hard drive used to require technical knowledge — finding the stream URL in a browser’s network inspector, running command-line tools, or copying links into obscure web services. VDownloader simplified that process to a paste-and-click operation: Copy the page URL from the browser, open VDownloader, paste the URL, and the software identifies the video, lists the quality options available, and downloads it to a specified folder. The resulting file plays in any media player, transfers easily from device to device, and is available without an internet connection.
VDownloader supports video from YouTube, Vimeo, Facebook, Dailymotion and a wide range of other video hosting sites. A built-in converter converts downloaded files into common formats for phones, tablets, and media players, and a batch mode downloads entire playlists or channels in one operation.
HISTORY
VDownloader came into the video downloader market at a time when YouTube was the dominant online video platform but did not provide any native download functionality for offline viewing. The browser-based workarounds offered in the early 2010s often broke when platforms updated their streaming infrastructure, leaving users unable to download until tools were updated to match. Desktop applications such as VDownloader created update mechanisms specifically to monitor the change in platforms and restore the download capability as soon as possible after YouTube or other services altered their delivery systems.
The software included a Plus tier that added extended browser monitoring, eliminated download queue limits, and scheduling for timed downloads. The free version kept the basic download and conversion functionality with no time limit so that it could be available to casual users while monetizing via the Plus upgrade for heavier use cases.
Platform coverage grew through updates as new video hosting services gained considerable audiences. The converter module grew with the demand for format — MP4 became the most important target format as it gained universal device compatibility, while MP3 extraction for audio-only downloads addressed users saving music performances and podcasts.
KEY FEATURES
Video Download from Multiple Platforms
VDownloader accepts URLs from YouTube, Vimeo, Facebook, Dailymotion, Twitch clip pages, and a number of other hosting services. After pasting a URL, the software queries the page and returns a list of available video quality options — typically ranging from 144p through 1080p or higher depending on what the source platform offers. Users choose the desired quality and download location before downloading. Download speed is dependent on the user’s internet connection; VDownloader downloads at the fastest rate that the user’s connection allows without artificial throttling.
Playlist and Channel Download
Pasting the URL of a playlist instead of a single video URL will queue all of the videos in the playlist for sequential download. Channel download queues all of the videos of a YouTube channel that are publicly accessible. Each item in the batch queue downloads in the selected quality setting and the queue displays progress per item. Users can pause, resume, or delete individual items from the queue without affecting other downloads.
Browser Monitor
The browser monitor monitors the clipboard and active browser tabs for video URLs. When VDownloader detects the YouTube or supported platform URL in the clipboard or the active tab, it automatically adds the video to the download queue or shows a download prompt, without the need to manually copy and paste URLs. The feature operates in the background while the browser is running.
Format Conversion
After downloading, the converter converts video files into formats for specific devices: MP4, AVI, MKV, MOV, and WMV for video; MP3, AAC, M4A, OGG, and WAV for audio only extraction. Device presets are aimed at iPhone, iPad, Android devices and PlayStation. The conversion is done using the video that has already been downloaded instead of needing to download it at a different encoding — VDownloader downloads the highest available quality and converts locally. Conversion speed is dependent on the processor performance.
Subtitle Download
For YouTube videos that have available subtitles or auto-generated captions, VDownloader downloads the subtitle file in addition to the video file. Subtitle files are saved as SRT format for compatibility with most media players. Language selection is the selection between available subtitle tracks when there are multiple language options.
Scheduled Downloads
VDownloader Plus adds a scheduler that queues downloads to run at a certain time — overnight, during off-peak internet hours, or at any time — so that large batch downloads can run without the user needing to be at the computer.
