Gramps is free software designed for creating and keeping track of family trees. As it’s open source and offers fine grained privacy controls, Gramps allows users to export data in several different formats.

Genealogy software designed for both amateur genealogist and serious researcher use. GEDCOM files generated by many proprietary genealogy programs can be imported directly, and reports produced with various features. Furthermore, the plugin system allows additional functions like importing/exporting/mapping/reporting that extend its capabilities further.

Reports for exploring your family tree include listing all persons, or only specific ones with notes and photos attached, with or without associated notes and photos. Graphical ancestor and descendant charts support various relationship types including stair, hourglass, fan charts etc. Additionally there are maps which allow historical maps stored as media objects to be converted into custom map overlays.

Users can easily backup their database and restore to a previous version, making this option simple and effective. We strongly advise taking time before upgrading to the latest version.

Gramps is multilingual and has been translated to over 40 different languages by its community. A wiki provides tips, tutorials and examples. Gramps relies on user contributions for maintaining and expanding its functionality – something particularly appreciated considering usability is often hard to improve in open source software projects; GEPS seeks to identify changes which will significantly increase Gramps usability.
