Shazam listens to a short piece of recorded music, creates a digital fingerprint, and compares that fingerprint with its music catalog to identify the track. It can recognize sound playing in the room or music produced by another app on the same device. The result is a catalog entry with the song and artist, not a copy of the audio file. Shazam saves identified tracks to its library when the account and synchronization settings permit, then can hand playback to a connected music service.
Make one match
A normal request listens for one result. The recording needs enough distinctive music to create a useful fingerprint. Speech over the song, a very short fragment, a live arrangement, or heavy background noise can prevent a match even when the original studio release exists in the catalog.
Recognition can continue after the user switches to another app. It can also identify music playing through the device while headphones are in use on supported systems. The microphone and system-audio permissions determine what it can hear. A failed result does not name which condition caused the failure, so retrying a clearer section is more useful than repeating the same obscured fragment.
Queue it offline
Without an Internet connection, recognition can still create the fingerprint. It stores the request and tries to match it after the device reconnects. The offline result is therefore pending, not a local identification against a complete catalog stored on the phone.
This delay creates a practical boundary. If the recording was too weak, reconnecting cannot improve the original sample. Shazam may return no result after the network comes back, and the song may no longer be playing for another attempt. Capturing a second request during a clearer chorus gives the later catalog check a different sample.
Leave continuous mode
Auto Shazam keeps trying to identify music until it is turned off. It can continue while another app is open or while the device is locked. Identifications from that session are grouped by date in the library, which fits a television episode, shop, or event where several songs play in sequence.
The word Auto describes repeated listening, not automatic stopping. Forgetting to turn it off can create a long list of surrounding tracks and continue microphone use beyond the intended moment. On Android, the choice between a single result and continuous mode changes whether recognition stops after one match. The notification controls provide the direct stop when the main Shazam screen is no longer open.
Keep the library
Shazam can synchronize identified songs across devices and back them up through the account’s cloud settings. On Apple devices, this requires the same Apple Account, two-factor authentication, and enabled Music Recognition and Shazam entries in iCloud. Songs can remain only on the device when cloud backup is off.
Local storage is the second point of friction. Restoring the device to factory settings or moving to a new device can remove an unsynchronized library. Signing in afterward does not recreate identifications that never reached the account backup. Checking the cloud switches before replacing a phone protects the history; exporting a streaming playlist protects a separate list, not the complete Shazam record.
Open the song
An identified entry can show artist information, lyrics, concert details, and a preview. Full-song playback depends on a connected supported streaming service and the listener’s access there. A successful Shazam match therefore does not grant ownership or download the track.
Apple Music and Spotify can receive identified tracks in a dedicated playlist when synchronization is enabled. That playlist follows the streaming service’s catalog. A song can appear in the Shazam library yet fail to play in the connected service because of region, account, or catalog differences. Removing a song from one destination should not be assumed to remove every copy of its identification elsewhere.
