Origin was EA’s desktop store, game library, downloader, and launcher. It tied purchased games to an EA account, downloaded their installation files, applied updates, and started them from one library. It has now shut down. EA replaced it with the EA app, so installing an old Origin client no longer restores the former service. Anyone returning to an Origin purchase must use the same EA account in the replacement app.
The library moved
Games and extra content bought through Origin remain attached to the account rather than to the retired client. Signing in to the EA app with that account transfers the library view and gives access to eligible downloads. This migration does not turn Origin installers into permanent offline copies. The account record still determines ownership, and the replacement app handles installation and launch checks.
Platform compatibility still applies after the move. A Mac user can download only games that have a Mac release. The EA app supports current PC and Mac environments, not Chromebooks, and an older operating system may require an update before installation. A title that once appeared in an Origin library can also disappear from the visible list because of a wrong account, cached library state, or a service issue.
Recover missing games
Start by confirming the email address and EA account used for the original purchase. Multiple accounts can make a legitimate library look empty. The EA app includes App Recovery for clearing its cache when a game appears missing, a download stalls, the app remains offline, or the app cannot update itself. Cache clearing refreshes local records; it cannot correct a publisher outage or restore content owned by another account.
A damaged installation may need the Repair command on its game tile. Repair checks the installed files and retrieves missing material. Reinstallation is a later option, not the first answer for a large title, because it can repeat a substantial download. Saves also deserve separate attention: cloud synchronization depends on game support, while local save folders can sit outside the installation directory.
Offline has limits
The current replacement can enter offline mode, but the game must have launched online at least once beforehand. Only titles that do not require their own Internet connection can run this way. EA also limits how long an eligible game can continue offline after its last online launch. Closing the EA app returns it to online behavior at the next start, so offline mode is not a permanent account-free configuration.
This distinction matters on a trip or an unreliable connection. Install and launch each required game while online before leaving, then confirm that its own menus do not depend on remote servers. Multiplayer games and titles with mandatory service checks remain unavailable even when the launcher itself has entered offline mode.
What remains useful
An Origin page now has historical and migration value, not a working-client role. It explains where an older EA library went and why an Origin download should no longer be treated as the route to a purchased game. The safe path is the EA app from EA, the original account, and a check of the library before deleting old game folders or local saves.
Keep purchase receipts and account-recovery details separate from the computer. If a title is absent after the correct login and a cache reset, use EA account support rather than downloading an unofficial Origin build. The retired name may still appear in old instructions and folders, but the live entitlement and download workflow now belong to its successor.
