Norton Family links a child profile to the computers and mobile devices that child uses, then applies household rules and records supported activity. A parent can set web categories, search and video supervision, device schedules, app rules, location checks, and an instant lock. The service acts on the assigned account and device permissions rather than replacing the operating system’s user accounts. Norton Family therefore needs a separate setup on every device, and the available controls change with the operating system.
Assign the right account
On a shared Windows computer, the parent assigns each Windows sign-in to the matching child profile. If two children use one Windows account, Norton Family cannot separate their activity accurately. A child who signs into an unassigned account can also fall outside the intended rules. Create standard accounts for each child and confirm the assignment before relying on reports.
Browser supervision needs the Norton extension in supported desktop browsers. The extension handles web, search, and video activity on encrypted sites. Disabling it can leave gaps or reduce detail, even though time rules and instant lock continue to work. Norton sends a notice when the child removes or disables the extension, but the parent still needs to restore it.
Combine time rules
Time supervision uses both a daily allowance and a grid of allowed or blocked hours. A two-hour allowance inside an eight-hour allowed window permits two hours of use during that window, not eight. Monitor mode records a Windows rule violation without ending the session, while Block mode stops use when the limit or curfew applies.
The allowance does not automatically become one shared total across all devices. If a child has several devices and each receives two hours, each device can allow that amount. Grouping can copy the same rule, but it does not turn the devices into one combined clock. Time calculation also differs on iOS, where the daily total control does not work in the same form as on Windows and Android.
Prepare mobile permissions
Android needs several permissions for full supervision. Usage access supports app and time measurement, accessibility helps web monitoring, device administrator resists unauthorised removal, and location permission supports location reports. Android can revoke permissions after long periods without use, and a child can move activity into another user profile or Private Space where Norton Family is absent. Check the permission screen when reports suddenly stop.
iOS setup uses a local VPN for web activity outside the Norton browser and an installed management profile for time supervision and instant lock. Removing either component changes what the parent can see or enforce. The emergency PIN available on some devices does not release an iOS lock; the parent must release it through the account.
Read platform limits
App supervision lists and restricts supported programs on Android and Windows, but it does not cover every Windows Store app or program running as a service. Video supervision concentrates on supported video sites rather than recording every video played anywhere. Location is approximate and depends on the device, network, GPS access, and regional availability.
Reports describe what Norton Family captured under active permissions. An empty period can mean no activity, a disabled extension, a missing permission, a different account, or a disconnected device. Check device status before treating the report as proof that nothing happened.
