ManyCam is a live video switcher that turns cameras, a screen, media files, and layered graphics into one virtual webcam feed. A meeting or streaming service sees that composed feed as a camera device. It sits between the physical sources and the receiving app: it changes what the audience sees, but it does not replace the meeting room, streaming account, or recording destination.
The virtual camera
The Main Live window shows the picture currently leaving ManyCam. To send it into a browser call or desktop meeting app, the user must select ManyCam Virtual Webcam in that app’s camera settings. Leaving the receiving app set to the physical webcam bypasses every scene and overlay prepared in ManyCam.
Audio has a second routing path. The physical microphone becomes an audio source inside the scene, and the receiving app selects ManyCam Virtual Microphone. Selecting only the virtual camera does not automatically route sound. A muted scene, missing microphone source, or wrong playback device can produce correct video with silence.
Scenes and presets
A preset stores a prepared scene. Its source can be a webcam, desktop region, game, IP camera, mobile camera, image, video, or blank background. Several layers can place a speaker over a screen share or add another camera. Each layer has its own crop, zoom, rotation, color, and audio state.
The active preset is the live output. An inactive preset can enter preview mode, where the user can adjust it without sending those changes to viewers. CUT switches immediately, while TRANS uses the chosen transition. Editing the active preset instead of the preview can expose setup work, source menus, or an unintended camera during a broadcast.
Resolution negotiation
ManyCam lets the user choose an output resolution and frame rate. The receiving service still decides which formats it accepts. If it rejects the requested resolution, It can fall back to an accepted size that does not exceed the selection. A stream can therefore arrive at a lower resolution than the number chosen in ManyCam.
More layers and higher frame rates increase processing work. A single camera scene can run smoothly while a screen capture, background removal, and several video layers drop frames on the same computer. Testing the exact live scene matters more than checking an empty preset. Closing unused sources reduces the number of simultaneous decoders and capture paths.
Source ownership
A physical camera can be busy in another application or blocked by operating-system permission. ManyCam needs access before it can create the virtual copy. An IP camera also needs a reachable stream address and credentials. A media file must remain at a readable path.
Exported presets preserve scene configuration, but they do not package every physical device. Importing a project on another computer still requires the referenced cameras and microphones to exist. ManyCam can reconnect when compatible devices are available; otherwise the scene keeps a missing source until the user replaces it.
Before going live
A complete check includes the picture inside ManyCam, the selected virtual devices inside the destination app, and a short private test at the destination. Audio monitoring confirms that ManyCam receives the microphone, but it cannot prove that the meeting service selected the virtual microphone. Previewing an inactive scene protects the audience from setup changes, while a private destination test catches the final routing error.
