Luminar NEO edits photographs while keeping the source image and the editing instructions as separate objects. The catalog tracks where photos live and records masks, adjustments, and other edit state. Export creates a rendered image for another program or service. This differs from a basic file editor that overwrites the opened picture when the user presses Save: closing Luminar NEO does not require writing the current look into the original photo.
Catalog edits
Adding a folder can leave its photos in their existing disk location. Importing from a card or external drive can copy or move them into another folder. The catalog stores the relationship between each source file and its edits, so moving a photo outside Luminar NEO can break that relationship even though the image file itself still exists.
Luminar NEO can create several catalogs. The documentation notes that multiple smaller catalogs can improve performance. A catalog split also divides search, albums, and edit history across separate databases, so opening the wrong catalog can make a known photo appear missing until the user switches to the catalog that tracks it.
Single images
Edit Single Image opens a photo without adding its folder to the ordinary catalog tree. The source remains in its original location, and Luminar NEO places a reference in the Single Image Edits collection. This is useful for a temporary job, but the collection keeps that reference until the user removes it.
Removing the reference from Single Image Edits keeps the source file on disk. Moving a single-edit photo into a catalog folder has different consequences: the documented drag action works only on macOS and moves the original file into that folder. The photo can still remain listed under Single Image Edits until the user removes that reference separately.
Synced adjustments
Sync Adjustments takes the edit stack from one selected photo and applies it to other selected photos. It can process a set that shares lighting or camera conditions without rebuilding the same adjustments by hand. The result remains editable in each destination photo rather than becoming one flattened group file.
Not every edit transfers. Crop, Erase, and Background Removal stay out of the sync operation. The catalog thumbnails are JPEG previews, so a raw photo can also look inaccurate in the gallery immediately after synchronization. Opening it in Single view or Edit view forces a more useful inspection before the user exports the batch.
Plugin handoff
Luminar NEO can work as a plugin in another photo editor. The handoff determines the object that arrives. A Photoshop call or a Lightroom choice that includes existing adjustments sends a TIFF copy. Edits then apply to that rendered copy rather than the untouched raw sensor data.
A raw workflow needs the standalone editor or a Lightroom handoff that exports the original source file. Plugin mode also does not expose every catalog function. Opening Luminar NEO from another editor therefore changes both the available catalog work and the type of file receiving the edits.
Exported files
Edits save automatically in the catalog, but another application does not see that catalog state as a finished picture. Export renders the chosen look into an image file with its selected dimensions, color settings, and output format. Creating a new export after later edits produces another rendered result; it does not update an earlier exported file automatically.
Backing up only the catalog preserves edit instructions but not source photos that live elsewhere. Backing up only the source folders preserves original pixels but not the catalog’s adjustments and organization. A restorable Luminar NEO project needs both parts when the catalog and photos occupy different locations.
