Different edits of one song may share much of their acoustic material. A radio edit, remaster, or live recording can therefore need manual confirmation even when the fingerprint finds a close relationship. Fingerprinting narrows the review; it does not decide which copy the owner prefers.
Removal is destructive
The duplicate screen suggests files for removal, but the user chooses the checked items before batch deletion. Folder path, bitrate, file type, artwork, and playback quality can matter more than the suggested default. The copy with the cleaner tags is not necessarily the best audio source.
A batch action multiplies one mistaken selection across the group. A current backup should exist outside the scanned folders before deletion begins. The library database alone cannot restore an audio file that no longer exists on disk.
iTunes adds another layer
Scanning iTunes reads its library context, while scanning a local folder works directly from selected files. Applying a result to iTunes and applying it to an original folder are related but distinct destinations. A file moved outside iTunes may remain in the library as a missing reference.
