Granny has received positive reviews for its combination of tense gameplay, challenging puzzles and overall plot. It’s a straightforward first-person horror, survival, puzzle game that’s available on multiple devices.

Players begin Granny after a cutscene that shows a frightening attack in the woods, waking up in a bed trapped in a mysterious house with a frightening occupant. Here the game begins as the player embarks on a tense journey that’s filled with clues that the owners of the house has locked more than one person in this house in the past. Gameplay is strictly single-player, which helps create an immersive feeling. To further create the feeling of immersion, the avatar player has no name, which allows the human player to feel that they are the ones navigating this frightening new world.

The player will move through the home looking for a way to escape, gathering various items and facing multiple puzzles along the way. Meanwhile, Granny will alert on loud noises and appear to startle and attack the player. This makes even moment fraught with tension and it means that every movement counts. The player must stay careful and alert at all times, which adds another level to the game.

There are five difficulty levels: Practice, Easy, Normal, Hard and Extreme. There is no enemy to contend with in Practice mode. The house is empty and the player can roam around at will. Challenges become more intense as the difficulty level increases and in the harder modes, the atmosphere of Granny itself changes to make every task more difficult.

Options

There are multiple ways to customize the gameplay. Nightmare changes the music and textures in the game to create a totally different look and feel. This mode also adds rats to the house. These little creatures will complicate things by alerting Granny, who players definitely don’t want to see.

Extra Locks adds even more challenges to the game and Darker actually makes everything darker so that it is harder to see. If you play on Extreme difficult, Darker and Extra Locks game modes are automatically applied.

Challenges

There are lots of pitfalls to avoid throughout the game. For one thing, the house is laced with bear traps. But the biggest danger is Granny herself.

If the player is caught by her, the day ends and the player resets to the bedroom. There are many other hazards throughout the house that can knock the player out and trigger a reset.

However, there are multiple places to hide throughout the home so that Granny and other dangers can be more easily avoided. Successfully hide from her and the gameplay continues.

Pros and Cons

While many reviewers like the gameplay itself, some have complained about the low graphic quality of the game.

On the plus side, players say Granny is easy to navigate and it’s challenging without being too challenging. Reviews for the game are overwhelmingly positive.
