Folder Lock protects files in two different ways. It can hide or lock an existing folder so that ordinary Windows browsing cannot open it, and it can place files inside an encrypted Locker. A Locker is a container whose contents receive AES-256 encryption. That second path protects the data itself rather than merely hiding its location. The distinction matters when documents leave the computer on a USB drive or enter a synchronized cloud folder.
Lock or encrypt
The Lock Folders command applies access controls to a file, folder, or drive that already exists. It is useful when the main problem is casual access on the same computer. Folder Lock can also keep a locked item hidden from normal file browsing. The original data stays in its existing location, however, so locking should not be described as the same operation as encryption.
A Locker works more like an encrypted storage area. Folder Lock creates the container, assigns it a password, and encrypts each file placed inside it. The user opens the Locker when work begins and closes it afterward. A file copied out of the open Locker becomes an ordinary unencrypted copy at its destination, so the protection follows the copy only when the destination itself has encryption.
Passwords have no reset
Folder Lock has no backdoor into an encrypted Locker. The publisher cannot reconstruct a forgotten Locker password or decrypt its contents. An email address can help with account matters, but it cannot replace the cryptographic password that protects the files. This makes a separate password record essential before the Locker becomes the only copy of important material.
The same warning applies when moving a Locker between computers. The container can travel, but access still depends on its password. Portable Lockers can live on a USB drive or other removable storage, and they can travel as files. The destination computer does not gain access merely because Windows can see the container.
Cloud means synchronization
Folder Lock can create a Locker inside a Dropbox, Google Drive, or OneDrive folder. The cloud company then synchronizes the encrypted container. Folder Lock does not run a separate backup service for that job. A sync client must finish uploading changes before another computer can receive them, and an interrupted sync can leave the remote copy behind the local one.
Synchronization is also different from backup. Deleting a Locker locally can propagate that deletion to the cloud folder. The cloud provider’s restore controls may recover an earlier copy, but their retention rules decide how long that option remains. Keeping another offline copy protects against an accidental deletion that synchronization repeats everywhere.
Remove plain copies
Putting a document into a Locker does not automatically erase every earlier copy. Folder Lock can shred the original after encryption. Shredding writes over the selected data and bypasses the Recycle Bin, so choosing the wrong source cannot be repaired with an ordinary restore command. The safer sequence is to open the encrypted copy, confirm that it is complete, and only then remove the plain original.
Folder Lock also stores private notes, payment-card details, and account credentials in its Secrets area. Those records depend on the same careful password handling as encrypted files. Encryption protects stored data, but it cannot correct a lost password, an incomplete cloud sync, or a plain copy left in another folder.
