Overview

Acronis Snap Deploy copies a prepared disk image to many computers. An administrator builds one reference machine, captures its disks or selected volumes, and deploys that image to target PCs through a server or bootable media. The result replaces the target’s operating-system layout and installed applications with the chosen baseline. Acronis Snap Deploy is not a file synchronization service or a normal remote installer: it writes an image to storage and can remove the data that was there before.

The image is the baseline

Acronis Snap Deploy Master Image Creator captures the source system, while OS Deploy Server sends the resulting image to targets. A deployment template holds choices for the target disk, volume sizing, computer identity, network settings, accounts, licensing, and the action taken after deployment.

The captured image carries the state of the reference computer. An old application, local setting, or unwanted file in that machine can spread to every target. Build and test the reference machine before capture, then keep the image name tied to the hardware group and intended purpose.

Targets lose data

Deployment can delete some or all information on a target disk. Selecting the wrong machine or disk is therefore a destructive mistake, not a reversible copy conflict. The default target can be the first hard disk reported by the firmware, which may not be the disk an operator expected on a machine with several drives.

Check model, MAC address, disk layout, and target list before starting. A backup stored on the target itself does not protect it from imaging. Keep recovery data on separate storage and test the deployment against a spare machine with the same disk arrangement.

Agents prepare machines

The Management Agent can remain in an installed system and let a later online deployment reboot that machine into a deployment environment. A machine without the agent can start the deployment agent from PXE or removable media instead.

Online deployment still interrupts the running operating system. It reboots the target and replaces its disk state, so it cannot preserve unsaved work merely because the job began from Windows. Firmware and hardware recognition also determine which boot environment works. Standard Acronis media supports common BIOS and UEFI machines, while some UEFI or unsupported hardware cases need WinPE media with suitable drivers.

PXE reduces visits

Acronis Snap Deploy can identify targets by MAC address, send Wake-on-LAN, and direct them to a PXE server. This can prepare a room of computers without placing a USB drive into each machine.

Wake-on-LAN depends on firmware support and the network path. Broadcasts may not cross a subnet without a Wake-on-LAN proxy, and a powered-off machine with the feature disabled will not join. PXE also depends on DHCP and boot configuration. A failed automatic start may require a person to select network boot locally.

Multicast needs support

Acronis Snap Deploy multicast lets OS Deploy Server send one image stream that many targets receive together. Unicast sends a separate stream to every target and divides available bandwidth between those copies. Multicast can therefore finish a large simultaneous deployment much faster.

The network must support and correctly configure IGMP. Without that support, the expected group traffic may fail or flood the wrong parts of the network. The template can limit bandwidth and set multicast time to live, but those values need testing on the actual switches and routers. Unicast is the fallback when multicast cannot operate reliably.

Identity needs planning

Default settings can copy the master computer’s name and network configuration while generating a unique security identifier for each target. Reusing a name or fixed network address across many machines creates conflicts after startup.

Individual settings can override a template for one computer, for example by selecting another target disk or machine name. A template can also ignore those overrides. Confirm which rule wins before a mixed-hardware batch, because an earlier per-machine exception may remain stored and affect a later job.

Boot media has limits

Bootable media can contain the deployment agent, Master Image Creator, Standalone Utility, and a system-report component. The chosen set controls whether the media captures an image, receives a server deployment, or writes an image without the server.

Uploading replacement components to an Acronis PXE Server removes the components already uploaded there. Boot behavior also differs across firmware modes, and some automatic-start choices do not apply under UEFI. Maintain a tested recovery medium before changing the PXE set used by production machines.
